First, it was the Civic, then it was the Accord. Now it's time for the City for a full redesign, and it's coming sooner than expected.
Our friends from Headlightmag reports that the next-generation City could come out just before the year ends. There are sweeping changes to be expected for the small sedan too. The current model of the City has been around since 2014, therefore making it ripe for a full model change.
So, what can we expect from the 2020 Honda City?
With the Jazz/Fit also slated for a full model change, it perhaps comes as no surprise that the City will be fully redesigned as well. After all, the City has been based on the Jazz since 2003, and it's unlikely that it will change any time soon.
Also, the City could get turbo power, just like its big brother, the Civic. As more manufacturers go for downsized engines, the City could soon follow suit. Under the hood of the City will be a three-cylinder engine but it will be boosted to make more power than the current 1.5-liter, four-cylinder unit. Whereas the City of the present makes 120 PS (128 with Earth Dreams tech), the turbocharged 1.0 makes 129 PS. Transmission options are likely to be a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and a six-speed manual sourced from the Civic.
While power is up slightly, torque gets a significant bump at 200 Nm whereas the 1.5-liter has 145 Nm or 153 Nm, depending on the market. The 1.0-liter turbo is currently being used in the EU-market Honda Civic. That being said, the naturally-aspirated 1.5-liter could be retained as a base engine for other markets, us included.
As for the design, it is possible that it will follow the form of the Civic and Accord, meaning a radical redesign inside and out. We're predicting a bold front end with slim, upswept headlights, prominent grill and defined corners. The roofline could be changed too, employing a fastback design. We're also expecting some growth in dimensions as well.
Headlightmag predicts that the 2020 Honda City will make its world premiere by the fourth quarter of 2019. Given that the Tokyo Motor Show will be held at around the same time this year, the world could get a first glimpse of the car over there. If come October, we see the all-new City (known as the Grace in Japan) over in Tokyo, it will be an interesting time for the B-segment sedan class indeed.
