2019 Kia Ceed GT shows its hot hatch credentials

Fancy the Hyundai Veloster but need a bit more space? Kia's got you covered.

The Korean automaker has just announced the debut of the Cee'd GT, and it gets the Veloster's turbocharged engine wrapped in a practical five-door hatchback shape. The Cee'd GT follows the footsteps of the old model and continues Kia's ambitions in the hot hatch market.

Granted, the power figures suggests it's more warm hatch than all out hot hatch. It's powered by a boosted 1.6-liter, four cylinder engine, much like its cousin, the Hyundai Veloster N. Unlike the N however, it's detuned but still makes a respectable 204 PS and 265 Nm of torque. It's down by 46 PS but the Cee'd GT's figures are close to that of the Toyota 86 and Subaru BR-Z. A six-speed manual is standard although a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is also available.

With those engine upgrades, the suspension has been tweaked to handle the extra power. It sits lower than the standard Cee'd and gets stiffer dampers and springs. Beefier anti-roll bars have been added, and other enhancements were made to make the car drive sharper, says Kia. Larger vented discs are also part of the chassis upgrades, along with a quicker steering rack.

As for the car itself, it gets GT-specific front bumpers with a deeper front chin and larger corner air intakes. There's also honeycomb patterns on the center air intake and grill wherein the latter has it in red. More red accents are seen on the lower half of the hatchback and it rides on low-profile, multi-spoke alloy wheels. At the back, an integrated diffuser and bigger spoiler separates it from more pedestrian versions of the Cee'd.

Inside, it's largely carried over from the standard Cee'd save for a few trim changes. More red highlights are seen on the dash, door panels, seats and shift boot. There's also a thicker-rimmed steering wheel to complement the sporty accents. Also, the seats have thicker bolsters to hold front occupats in place during spirited drives and, on the technology front, there's Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
