It seems that our previous reports were true: Italian coachbuilding and design firm Pininfarina is relaunching as a luxury, electric car brand. Now officially called Automobili Pininfarina, the brand is set to introduce their first project by 2020 – a fully electric Pininfarina-badged hypercar.
Automobili Pininfarina was launched recently by parent company Mahindra & Mahindra. The luxury electric automaker will then use the brand's experitse with electric vehicles as well as experience in Formula E to build the upcoming hypercar. Afterwards, the brand will then focus on building fully electric SUVs.
For now, details regarding the still unnamed project are scarce. According to a report by Automotive News Europe, Michael Perschke, CEO of Automobili Pininfarina, claimed that their first model will 'be a true hypercar'. It will also be capable of doing 0-100km/h in less than two seconds and have a range of around 500 km. This puts it in the same league as Tesla's upcoming Roadster.
As for design, there were no teasers or sketches released by Automobili Pininfarina. A possiblity is that the electric hypercar could look like an evolution of the hydrogen-electric H2 Speed Concept, which used two fuel cells to drive two electric motors.
With regard to the brand's forthcoming eletric SUV models, Perschke says that they will likely start at around 150,000 Euros. This puts it at the same price range as those of the Bentley Bentayga and the Range Rover. Once again, the brand will put to use Mahindra's expertise with Formula E in developing the high-riding electric vehicle.
