Porsche Mission E officially renamed as Taycan

Remember the Porsche Mission E Concept which debuted more than two years ago? Well, we can all forget that name now. During the brand’s 70th anniversary event, Porsche announced that the official name of their first purely electric vehicle will be called Taycan.

While the Mission E name did sound cooler, the Taycan name is said to be roughly translated as “lively young horse”. The said image is meant to be a reference to Porsche’s crest which features a leaping horse since 1952.

“Our new electric sports car is strong and dependable; it’s a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances and that epitomises freedom”, explains Oliver Blume, Porsche CEO.

Aside from the name, Porsche also released more details regarding the Taycan including a silhouette. The brand’s upcoming electric vehicle will be powered by two motors which provide a combined output of 600 PS. That said, Porsche claims it can do 0-100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds and 0-200 km/h in under 12 seconds. Combined with the performance, it will have a range of over 500 km.

The Porsche Taycan is set to begin production in 2019, and will go up against other pure electric vehicles such as the Tesla Model S. Furthermore, expect other variants and derivatives of the Taycan to be produced in the future as Porsche has invested EUR 500 million into the model name. One variant of the Taycan that we are already certain of is a crossover as previewed by the Mission E Cross Turismo.
