VW bids 'auf wiedersehen' to the third-gen Bettle with a special send-off

It's time to say goodbye once again to the Volkswagen Bettle. Last March, Volkswagen R&D Chief Frank Welsch confirmed at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show that the company has no plans of building another Beetle after the third-generation model.

Volkswagen said that they will stop production of the Beetle in 2019. However, instead of just quietly stopping production altogether, the company released two new special editions as a special send-off for the iconic 'bug'. Dubbed the 'Final Edition SE' and 'Final Edition SEL', it will be available in either coupe or convertible body styles and will come with exclusive equipment and unique décor styling elements.

“The loss of the Beetle after three generations, over nearly seven decades, will evoke a host of emotions from the Beetle’s many devoted fans. As we move to being a full-line, family-focused automaker in the U.S. and ramp up our electrification strategy with the MEB platform, there are no immediate plans to replace it,” said Hinrich J. Woebcken, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America.

Beginning with the exterior, the Final Edition Beetles get a plenty of chrome fixtures, as well as body-colored side mirror caps and Bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights. There are also two new colors that are exclusively available for the Final Edition SE and SEL; Safari Uni – a reinterpretation of the Harvest Moon Beige hue from the new Beetle, and Stonewashed Blue – a homage to the 1970 Jeans Bug and on the 2016 Beetle Denim.

Other available colors for the Final Edition Beetles include: Deep Black Pearl, Platinum Gray and Pure White. The convertible model will get a unique brown soft top except when painted in Safari Uni.

Completing the exterior changes on the Beetle are the new alloy wheels for the Final Edition SE and SEL models. The former gets 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with a 15-spoke design while the latter receives 18-inch white aluminum-alloys with a disc design reminescent of the Ultima Edicion body-colored steel wheels with chrome hubcaps.

Inside, the SE gets cloth and leather upholstery with rhombus-pattern seats. Meanwhile, the SEL is wrapped in diamond-stitched leather. All Final edition Beetles also feature a leather-wrapped steering wheel, stainless steel pedals, Climatronic automatic climate control and a three-color ambient lighting.

In terms of in-car entertainment, the SE is equipped with a Composition Media 6.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It has Bluetooth connectivity, USB, voice control, smartphone integration and Wi-Fi hotspot. The SEL, on the other hand, gets a Discover Media infotainment system which comes with added extras like navigation and a Fender Premium audio system.

Under the hood, both special edition models are powered by a 2.0-liter TSI engine that puts out 176 PS with 250 Nm of torque. It is then married to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Editions is now available in the US. There is no word if Volkswagen will offer it outside the US market.
