Peek into what the country’s top builders are cooking up
Considering that the Trans Sport Show (TSS) is one of the biggest staple events on Manila’s automotive calendar, there’s no surprise that we will see some fresh builds turn up from the builders that enter the show. With the perrenial car show still going strong for over two decades now, there is always one thing that one can observe aside from the cars themselves: Trends. What are the country’s top builders doing with their cars? Are there any themes they tend to stick to? Is there anything new from the aftermarket? Should you have any of these questions, chances are attending the Trans Sport Show may give you the answers.
For starters, it appears the 90’s are well underway to becoming a decade to treasure for most enthusiasts – if it isn’t already. We have decided to honor this golden era by representing our booth with a pair of high performance Nissans. We probably wouldn’t be in this business to begin with if we didn’t have love for cars like these, and it seems fitting that a properly worked S14 Silvia and a clean BNR32 Skyline GT-R represents what we love about cars.
Of course, any mention of the 90’s cars in the Philippines means Honda will always be thrown into the conversation. While these cars are known for having various performance options and a plethora of rare parts, it seems the trend for Honda guys are now going the completely opposite direction – back to stock. Yes, it has reached a point where folks like Autogenix are now doing Concours-level factory restorations of Civic and Integra Type Rs. All OEM, bone stock including clips, plastics, and all the interior pieces you can think of. After decades of beating on them throwing aftermarket bits into it, people are now beginning to preserve Hondas and bringing them back to life.
While the 90’s presence is pretty evident, there is actually a lot more classic variety than usual at this year’s Trans Sport Show. Instead of seeing the usual retro suspects like the Lancer Boxtype or Mango Corolla, other odd classics from farther ends of the earth have found their way into the show. Everything from a Ford Hotrod, to a Fiat Cinquecento (500), a cool blue Mercedes-Benz W113 'Pagoda' SL and a few select examples of classic Porsches can be seen around the show floor.
Some folks have even taken to restoring unfamiliar platforms like this fourth-gen 1970’s Toyota Crown also known as the ‘Kujira’ (Blue Whale) in Kyusha (old school) circles. Despite its rarity, no stone has been left unturned to prepare it for the caliber of vehicles at TSS.
Much as older and rarer vehicles have made their presence known, the exotic end of things are just as well represented. Chief among these is the contingent of exotica brought in by Import Hookup to take center stage. Aside from a McLaren 570S and a Ferrari 488 GTB, they’ve taken other luxury vehicles and added a host of aftermarket pieces to further distinguish their cars from the rest.
Oddly enough, most of the R35 GTRs present during the show are all running 20-inch Advan GTs in both standard and premium guise. Among the very few choices of wheels offered in GTR sizing, it appears the Advan GT has become the go-to wheel for outright performance for the GTR crowd.
Having a strong market for aftermarket parts locally, off-roaders are pretty much here to stay and will continue to hold real estate on the TSS show floor in the years to come. Trucks and SUVs have become a large part of the Filipino family, so dressing them up comes as second nature for these stalwart vehicles it appears.
Speaking of SUVs, it looks like Nissan has something new to offer to the market soon. It’s still in camouflage now, but maybe next year we’ll see some of these fixed up and displayed as well.
